Many photographers tried to capture the world of webcam modeling, but there’s one in particular who succeeded in doing so more intimately. Ira Lupu presented her multimedia project “On Dreams and Screens”, where she challenges the perception that part of the world has of cam girls by inviting viewers into their fascinating world.

Who is Ira Lupu?

Ira Lupu is an Ukrainian photographer, writer, and multimedia artist. Born in Odessa, Ukraine, she went on to study New Media Narratives in New York. Since then, she explores the world of documentary photography from a more metaphorical space.

She worked on making photos for important media outlets around the world, such as Vogue, InStyle, Dazed and even Vice. When it comes to her personal work, she centers around global women’s issues, and that’s how her project “On Dreams and Screens” was born.

Capturing Ukranian girls navigating the web cam modeling industry

The world of camming is a very lucrative one, with more and more people joining to break free of corporate life and jobs that offer no flexibility. As a webcam model, women can be their own bosses and manage their own time. If you’re curious about it and want to explore this work venue yourself, here you can learn more about the web cam modeling industry.

However, despite the fact that it’s a great career, the webcam industry is still a pretty misunderstood one. There are still a lot of prejudices and taboos around it, and Lupu has made it her mission to break all of them. In her latest multimedia project, she invites viewers to enter the world of webcam modeling to see it from a different perspective: that of cam models themselves.

In Ukraine to be precise, lots of women turned webcam modeling into their sake of income, while others use it as a way to explore their sexuality. Lupu shone light on this, to showcase how their lives are when there’s no camera rolling. In her photographs, we can see the apartments where these cam girls work, as well as their childhood places.

As Lupu puts it, “for most models from my project, the place where they work is also their home, so the girls often describe it like a place of self-reflection and self-contemplation; almost like a temple that leads to an altered consciousness state.

Even when the camming business keeps growing by leaps and bounds, the stigma coming from what many consider “sex work”, is still there. Ira Lupu and the heroines of “On Dream and Screens”, as she calls them, challenge those prejudices against the job that enables them to have a livelihood and be independent. They also show how being a webcam girl is way beyond sex. In fact, it’s wrong to refer to it as sex work, since it doesn’t fall into that category, though it might be related. Camming is not about sex, it’s about interaction, connection and emotion. Users go to cam sites to forge connections and interact with cam girls, and that’s what these women offer. In “On Dream and Screens”, there’s this and other stories to be told.
